Treasure Hunting

This week has just flown by, well, not literally, as I was in the car for 12 hours yesterday.
But it was all worth it as I've finally arrived in my hometown in Michigan to do some much-anticipated "treasure hunting" with my mother.  I've already scored a fabulous 70's dining set. No worries, I will post pictures of all my treasures when the weekend extravaganza has concluded!

This Friday, I just want to take a second and regroup and check out all my favorite images and products from the week.

Aura

So, I'm not stingy with my sources -- I can share and this one's a gem.

I've somewhat recently discovered a home furnishings line that I adore:  Aura Home.  They're based out of Australia, but ship here of course and my, oh my, am I in love with all of their linens.

I've been looking for the perfect shade of not-quite-coral bedding for my master and they have a couple of options that I am absolutely swooning over and a few that are testing my commitment to coral.  The best part is -- their prices aren't absurd.

The walls in my master bedroom are a deep turquoise - very deep and I am seriously thinking any of these options could be major winners mixed with some fun pillows & and cozy layers.

They have more than just fabulous bedding -- check out some of their other goodies and then check out their website and treat yourself this week to something Awesomely Aussie. . . wow that's cheesy.

I love these tapas napkins.  Of course they have other napkins, placemats, runners, etc., but I love the ecelctic mix of colors & patterns and think this size would be incredibly handy.

I love this peony rug in deep magenta and these tie-dyed pillows. They have a gorgeous selection of pillows and so reasonably priced.  I'm particularly fond of their selection of velvets, so perfect  for fall.

I hope you'll take a minute to check out Aura. I'm sure you'll find something to love.

Basket Case

So, my love for baskets is fairly strong.  I love them all, old and rickety or new and perfectly woven.  I have them sprinkled all over the house, holding shoes, blankets, ugly television components.  I have a set of baskets in the shop right now that I'm particularly fond of and even more so now that my friend, Patti Borrelli, pinned some images of my baskets spray painted silver . . . what??!  I would have never thought to spray paint baskets, but they look pretty fabulous!

These are the baskets I have in stock right now and I love them just as they are, but check out the following images of these beauties with a fresh facelift from
Remodelista.

Not only do I have a fabulously styled image of the baskets sittin' pretty, I have a picture of them actually being used in someone's space. They're practical but fun, and the silver gives the organic-feeling baskets an edge. LOVE.

Autumn Air

I can smell Autumn in the air and it's got me thinking about seasonal decorating -- particularly my autumn porch and table.  I want to share some of my inspiration with you this week and maybe get you thinking about some fun decorating projects you can do to welcome fall and up-coming Holidays.

Source: indulgy.com via Rachel on Pinterest

I will be welcoming friends and family in a similar way this autumn and I have the perfect spot on the front porch.  I'll make sure I post pictures of my finished product in a week or two.

Instead of a doing a lot of talking on this one, I just want to share with you some pics that I love and will using to inspire me as I create a welcoming, fall retreat in my home.  Obviously, I love these photos because of the easy DIY projects, but it's the color palettes that I find most striking.

all in the details

I'm convinced that it's the details that can make or break a space, or an outfit for that matter.  The right shoes, clutch, jewelry, takes a basically boring outfit and turns it into something fabulous. It's the same for any space:  You may have inherited some larger pieces that you just can't get rid of . . . have no fear, you can love that old, hand-me-down buffet -- you can, I promise.

Source: thecoastaltheory.com via Rachel on Pinterest

My husband hates it when I paint a piece of wood furniture, and I understand -- to a point.  Yes, there are some pieces that would be shameful to paint, but that old, ho-hum dresser that you picked up at the neighborhood garage sale, you need not hesitate to paint.  The first piece of furniture I ever refinished was an old dresser from The Salvation Army.  I painted it turquoise, distressed it slightly, and rubbed some stain over the edges.  That piece is still in my home today and I still LOVE it.  While this is not my dresser, it is very similar, and I promise that you could make this happen, even if you've never refinished a piece of furniture before.

Source: classiccasualhome.com via Rachel on Pinterest

Aside from my addiction to refinishing ugly old pieces of furniture, right now I'm finding myself placing pieces of faux-fur over every chair in the house. I have a large piece draped over the back of the sofa and covering the daybed.  Its a fun and super-inexpensive way to give your upholstery a new look.  Emily Henderson has styled this mid-century chair in the same way.  This actually looks like one of those small, inexpensive, flokati-style rugs from IKEA.  Just try it, especially now that the temps are cooling, it's the perfect way to welcome fall.  And it doesn't have to be faux-fur, it could be any of your favorite fabric remnants folded over and down the middle of any upholstered chair.  Just make sure it's long enough to be tucked under your seat cushion.

www.stylebyemilyhenderson.com

If you have a particularly neutral space, simply add some color.  Keep it consistent for a more modern look and for ultimate impact.  Of course, the color in this photo is a deep turquoise, my color du 'jour, but I can't help myself.   It's not overwhelming at all, just touches tastefully spread throughout the space.

If you're on a budget, try spray painting some lamps or picture frames.  Maybe recover the seats to your occasional chairs.  Sew some new covers for your toss pillows.  All fairly simply DIY projects.

This last photo has to be my favorite detail.  I know, I know, there's no turquoise in this space?!  But seriously, have you ever seen nail-heads tacked around a door frame?  You may have missed the subtle arch of the doorway, but the nailhead accentuates this detail and turns it into a focal point.   I'm hooked and will be incorporating this detail into a space soon.  Nailhead trim is for more than your upholstery . . . who would've thought.

I could go on and on sharing with you photos that have inspired me with the little things.  But hopefully this is enough to get you thinking . . .  and inspired.

It really is all in the details.

    COVETING

I'm pretty much in love with this mustard yellow color lately. I picked up a sweater in this color yesterday & I LOVE this arm chair from OKL. My living room is shedding tears of desire. . .

I love all of the classic Sorel winter boots.  This is the year I will finally buy a pair instead of simply oogling them all.

      THE LITTLE THINGS

The weather is not quite cool enough in Charlotte yet, but the second it is, I will be wearing a whimsical sweater like this one by TopShop for Nordstrom.

I saw a really cute and of course, stupid cheap, sweater with a white tiger on the front at Forever 21 last week . . . that will be on standby.

Happy Friday!

Finding Inspiration

As I've said before, I find inspiration in the little things, especially the great outdoors.  But no matter where you find your inspiration, you want your space to reflect the things you love.  If you can accomplish that, I truly believe your space will always feel fresh and relaxing.

It's been such a beautiful week here in Charlotte & I wanted to get outdoors and bring you some spaces that have effortlessly brought the outdoors in through subtle color palettes & even more literal pieces of artwork.

Eclectic Landscape design by San Francisco Landscape Architect Huettl Landscape Architecture

This shot is so lovely with the deep hues of the Japanese Maple, the purple of the lavender, and the yellows & greens in the grasses.  You could incorporate any combination of these colors in your space easily through accents or furnishings.

Below is a traditional space that has brought the outdoors in through color and texture. The hues of autumn leaves are found on the walls and arm chair, the calming greens of the sky and grasses are found on the draperies and sunroom walls, and the textures of the stone fireplace, the rustic coffee table and the chandelier reflect the trees and hardscape.

Traditional Family Room design by New York Architect Crisp Architects

I happen to be a beach bum at heart and any time I get to the beach, I'm determined I could live in a shack on only the fish I catch if only I could live there.  While my beach shack is likely to never happen, I can bring a little beach back with me to the Queen City.

Contemporary Landscape design by San Luis Obispo Landscape Architect Ecotones

Both spaces below have incorporated the beach in very different ways, one more literal than the other, but I adore both.

I love this modern space - it's so bright & fun.  The mid-century pieces in a crisp palette ensure all the focus is on the show-stopping mural.  Anybody can have a mural like this in their own home as there are several websites that have ready-made stock available and some will even take your own photos and turn them into wallpaper or fabric.

Eclectic Dining Room design by New York Interior Designer Anthony Baratta LLC

While the following space is much more traditional, it still feels casual and beachy because of the color palette.  The clean white linens, pale blue walls and punches of coral evoke an open & airy beach house.  The large scale and coral imagery of the artwork gives this bedroom a gorgeous focal point when you enter.

Both spaces execute the same theme very differently, but beautifully all the same.

I hope you're able to enjoy the outdoors this week and even if you simply pick some fresh flowers, I hope you bring the outdoors in . . .

Greige Addiction

For the first time in Charlotte, we've finally felt a dip in the temperatures and I can't help but get excited for all things Fall.  I thought it would be appropriate to kick of the week with a glance at a few of my fall favorites:  Essentially, all things gray and cozy.

Don't get me wrong, I love color, but there's no denying that my fall/winter wardrobe is largely comprised of greige.  You know, the color that's somewhere between dark gray and beige - Yep, that's the one and no matter how many sweaters, scarves, or pairs of boots I own in that color, I always need just one more.

So here are a few of my faves to inspire you and get you looking forward to cooler temps this week.

I love these boots from net-a-porter, but I'm also seriously considering a pair of Toms Desert Wedges - in Taupe of course. You should check them out, they're pretty much perfect.

source: 24.media.tumbler.com
Grammy's going to have to teach me how to knit.  It's the only way I can have a snood in every hue of greige.

I've had this picture pinned since the dead of summer . . .  I just couldn't help myself.  It's the essence of cozy.

And the bag below just might be the perfect fall carry-all for work and weekends at the cabin.

This last pic (from milkandhoneyhome.com) is a space that feels so moody and cozy thanks to over-sized tufted headboard and faux fur blanket.

I just got the new Restoration Hardware Fall Lookbook in the mail and I can't wait to pick up a set of their faux fur throws and pillows.  They're surprisingly affordable and will be the perfect accompaniment to a nice warm fire and Monday night football.

So Classic

My favorite palette right now has to be black & white.  I know, I know, so boring, right? I don't think so. I find it so refined and graphic.  Whether I'm adding it to my fall wardrobe or figuring out how to incorporate it into my home, simply put, I'm obsessed!

No. 2 pencil skirt in graphic print jcrew.com
Seriously, can J.Crew make their pencil skirts any more fabulous?  I mean the fit is already perfect, from the silhouette to the length, but this fall they've added some absolutely killer prints.  This little black and white number is rockin'.

I can totally see this skirt dressed down with a tucked in or belted chambray or a brightly hued tee.  Add a pair of lemon-colored skimmers, like my faves from Madewell, and you're set.

Staring at Stars Array Cardigan
urbanoutfitters.com
"Well, hello there lovely cardigan.  I will have you.  Some days I will put a belt around you, but have no fear, you can hang loose from time to time with some leather leggings."

I told you guys I'm obsessed. But at this price point (only $69), who doesn't want this cardigan from Urban Outfitters?

My current love for black & white is not limited to apparel.  I've been drawn to so many spaces lately that have incorporated this palette and I've been imagining it used in my home in so many ways.  The possibilities are endless ... which is problematic.  Where to start?

Option #1: Keep it simple but more contemporary: Add a pair of gold lamps with black & white ikat pillows to a bedroom or the living room.

Eclectic Bedroom design by Atlanta Interior Designer Dayka Robinson

While Option #2 shares the same lovely gilded accents as #1, it feels more lived-in & in my opinion, has a bit more character by adding this old, natural wood desk to the glossy black accents.  I'm not sure, but given all the antique pieces I have in my home, I'm thinking this is the way to go.

Some things are simple indeed.  Just have some fun.

Green Day

Even the smallest things inspire me and our labor day vacation was certainly no exception. The fading colors of the wood drying for the fireplace, the moss growing on the rocks along the hidden mountain trails, the broken and twisted tree limbs I imagine as jewelry stands -- I can't get enough.

Everywhere I looked I saw green. The gorgeous, saturated, deep tones of emerald.

I've had this particular photo in my portfolio for some time now; I've always loved this space and I think the deeper, more vibrant greens are more glamorous and seriously under-utilized.

Here are a couple of other spaces that have a much less formal feel, but nonetheless utilize this deep and saturated tone. It's so elegant and fresh and can be used quite casually. Pair it with natural wood tones, charcoal gray, or black with gilded accents.

Check out the all-too-fresh chevron patterned draperies. I can't say I've ever seen them done in this deep emerald green and I would love to see them next to a darker wall.
